Steps for Roasting a Lamb on a Spit

Make sure you have all the necessary tools in order to correctly attach the lamb to the spit if you’re planning to roast it on a spit for the first time.

You’ll need a rotisserie skewer as your first item. The skewer must have a tip at one end, be at least 1200mm long, and be able to connect to a motor.

The lamb’s spine is attached to the skewer using a back brace in the following step. Your lamb will bend like a banana during the cooking process if you don’t utilise a back brace. The ends of the back brace must be pointed so they can puncture through the animal’s back. Two wing nuts and a plate are included. Following the skewer’s passage through the U, the plate on the exterior of the animal fastens the spine to the skewer.

Using stainless steel wire is the next step in the procedure. We use it to close off the stomach cavity so that no filling escapes, enhancing the flavour of the meal. Although you could use a needle and thread instead, I personally think using wire and pliers is simpler.

Two substantial stainless steel prongs are also required. The prongs’ round 22mm holes make them completely compatible with the 22mm skewer. You can tighten it up nicely on the skewer because it has a big locking nut. If you are cooking an entire animal, you will require two of these. One is inserted via the shoulders, and the other is through the back legs.

You then need two leg holders. Once more, it contains a locking nut and a 22mm hole for the skewer, allowing it to secure onto the skewer. You pushed the animal’s legs back until they fit into the leg bracket’s V to secure the legs.

The counterbalance weight comes last. It’s arguably the most crucial component for grilling a whole animal since it helps to balance the animal evenly on the skewer because one side of the animal will always be heavier than the other. The skewer won’t spin evenly, it will flop in one direction, and it will really fight to get up one side if the balance is off. Your motor, which is the most expensive component, will be subjected to a great deal of unnecessary stress as a result.

This video I made demonstrates how to fasten a lamb to a spit roaster.

What Accessories do you need for Cooking a Whole Lamb

Attaching a lamb to a spit is a bit more involved than put attaching a roast or a chicken, but the flavour and spectacle are well worth it.
