Pig Roasting on a Spit

SP070 Spit Roasting

Have you ever attempted spit-roasting a pig? It’s quite simple. Have you ever eaten a spit-roasted pig? It’s delicious. Spit roasting a pig brings out the natural flavours of the pork and allows for a slow roasting that infuses the meat with the flavours of the spices, sauces, and marinades. It is recommended that you load the pig with both sweet juicy fruits and savoury spices before placing it on a spit over flame or heat.

A brilliant combination is to load the pig with sliced pineapple and teriyaki sauce and to baste the pig with teriyaki sauce mixed 50/50 with coconut water as it roasts. This stuffing is perfect for making a pan-Asian-Hawaiian-fusion roasted pig on a spit.

Furthermore, as spit roasting becomes increasingly popular, several manufacturers produce devices that make spit roasting accessible to anybody. There are also pre-made kits available that allow you to spit-roast over a campfire, fire pit, or bonfire. While you could make a manual spit roaster using inexpensive hardware store items, pre-assembled kits include pieces that fit together more smoothly and are less expensive. Some kits will also include motors that will turn the spit automatically, which is not only convenient but also provides a consistent turning speed.

Minion Spit Roaster

When deciding which spit roaster to purchase, there are numerous possibilities. Do you prefer the convenience of gas or the true flavour of charcoal? Are you intending to roast small suckling pigs (about 15kgs), medium-sized pigs (approximately 25kgs), or farm-raised whoppers (40kgs and up)? Will you leave the head-on for theatrics or take it off? To help you decide what size you’d need, we recommend the Flaming Coals Minion Spit Roaster. It is suitable for pigs weighing roughly 15kg.This spit roaster can turn up to 30kgs of meat. However, it’s spit’s length of 110cm limits the amount of pig you can cook. Alternatively, if you’re only intending to cook the barrel (no head or legs), a 30kg barrel will fit.

Spartan Spit Roaster

If you wish to prepare a medium-sized pig, we recommend the Flaming Coals Spartan Spit Roaster. It comes either with or without the windshield. This model has a 30kg capacity motor and is long enough to cook a medium-sized pig with the head intact. There is the option to upgrade the motor to a 60kg motor. However, if you were to cook a pig on a spit weighing more than 30 kg, we anticipate you would have to remove the head.

Warrior Spit Roaster

The Flaming Coals Warrior Spit Roaster is the largest spit roaster we would recommend for cooking huge hogs on a spit. This spit roaster not only has 150cm of cooking space, but it also has a 60kg capacity motor, so you can cook the biggest of pigs while keeping the head on.

Whether you create your own spit or purchase a ready-made one, roasting a pig on a spit at your next event is sure to be memorable.
