Gyro Cooking on a Barbecue Spit

One of the Greatest Methods for Party Catering

Gyros is a type of spit-roasted food that has its roots in the Mediterranean and was popularised in recent years among spit-roasting fans in Australia. It is pronounced, “yeros.”

What is it?

The simplest way to describe gyros cooked on a BBQ spit is to compare it to the thinly sliced shaved meat that fish and chip businesses use to produce souvlakis. Gyros are traditionally made with chicken or lamb, however practically any thinly sliced kind of meat can be used.

As a result of how simple it is to cook and how you can shred pieces of meat from the outside as the inside continues to cook, more customers are cooking gyros on their BBQ spits to cater for their parties, according to BBQ Spit Rotisseries. Gyros are intended to be shaved throughout the cooking process while still on the skewer and then let to finish cooking through, unlike whole chickens or roasts, which must be cooked fully and removed from the skewer before carving.

During 18th and 21st birthday parties, where the kids arrive at the party at all different hours, this works incredibly well. To ensure that you always have freshly sliced, hot meat to serve, gyros allow you to keep shaving more meat from the outside.

Here is a quick video that will make your taste senses go into overdrive as it shows chicken and lamb gyros being cooked on the Flaming Coals Small Spit Roaster.

Equipment:

If you’re planning on cooking your own gyros at home, here is what you’ll need:
•    BBQ Spit
•    Charcoal (mallee root charcoal is the best)
•    BBQ spit skewer
•    BBQ spit motor
•    Gyros discs

What is a gyros disc?

Gyros discs are rather uncommon, therefore the video below should help clarify what they are and why utilising discs instead of prongs is better. But in essence, it makes it simpler to cut flesh against the flat disc surface as opposed to dodging the prong’s spikes. Although it’s not necessary, you want as few obstructions as you can when your electric carving knife is moving swiftly over hot charcoal.

What is a Gyros Disk

What meat to buy:
• Lamb’s shoulder
• Chicken thigh

Recipe: You could ask the butcher to marinade the meat for you if you’re new to making gyros and are unsure of how to do it. However, here is a recipe for lamb gyros that I often use if you’re picky like I am and prefer to prepare things yourself.

A useful tip is to alternate portions of lamb and chicken to prevent the meat from drying out. This will allow the chicken’s fat to prevent the lamb’s meat from drying out.

Did you know? The Turkish term Doner, which also means “to turn,” is the source of the Greek verb Gyros, which means “to turn.” The Greeks used to refer to this type of cuisine as Doner rather than Gyros, but they changed it after receiving criticism for adopting a Turkish name. Politics seems to have no place in even the most basic BBQ spit!
